What is the minimum age for a London PHV driver?
Transport for London requires a private hire vehicle (PHV) driver licence applicant to be at least 21 years old before a licence can be granted.
Do I also need to have held my driving licence for three years?
Yes. Age is only one part of the eligibility requirement. TfL also requires you to have held an eligible Great Britain, Northern Ireland, European Union or European Economic Area motorcar driving licence for at least three years.
This means being 21 does not automatically make you eligible. You must also satisfy the driving-licence history requirement.
Is there an upper age limit?
TfL’s PHV Driver Handbook states that there is no upper age limit for a London PHV driver licence. However, licensed drivers must continue to meet TfL’s medical fitness requirements.
What else do I need to qualify?
Meeting the age and driving-licence requirements does not by itself guarantee that you will receive a PHV driver licence. TfL also considers requirements including your right to work, medical fitness, fit-and-proper status, criminal-record checks and the required driver assessments.
Where should I go next?
